"Sparkle" Opens in Top 5 at Box Office

(August 20, 2012) The movie Sparkle which opened Aug. 17 and stars American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and late superstar singer Whitney Houston, was in the Top 5 at the box office this weekend.  Sparkle's $12 million open was considered by critics to be respectable since the movie's budget was only $15 million. 

Executive produced by Houston and also Bishop T.D. Jakes, Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 film that featured Irene Cara as the lead character that Sparks now portrays. The original film was set in Harlem, New York but the remake was in Detroit, Michigan with a more upscale set. 

Sparkle is Sparks official film debut and Houston's last artistic work before her untimely death last February. "His Eye is on the Sparrow" was performed by Houston in the movie and is currently being played on gospel radio.
