Airplay 360 South African Spotlight Artist: Dr. Tumi

In a season where there’s a deeper yearning for new songs, award winning gospel artist Dr Tumi stands out as what the doctor has ordered. Dr Tumi is not only a gifted songwriter par excellence but he is also a seasoned minister of song, who is graced with belting out in season melodies that flow from the throne.

Born Tumishang Makweya, the multifaceted artist from Seshego, Limpopo has emerged as the Lord’s pen and the ink of the Spirit. Dr Tumi writes songs that are in synch with the Lord’s move of the season. Dr Tumi got hit by the song writing bug when he was just 12 years. To date he has written hundreds of songs. A former lead singer for award winning gospel group – Intense, Dr Tumi penned all the songs for the group’s album – Heart2Heart, save one. He also wrote all 16 tracks of his debut album - Heart of a King, which won Best RnB Gospel Award at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in 2012, where he was also nominated in four categories. Dr Tumi’s inspiration for song writing is derived from fellowship, the word and experiences in his day to day journey with the Lord.

His songs transcend generations, cultures and times as they are riddled with the word, which is always in season. Dr Tumi reveals that song is the primary language that connects him with the Giver of gifts, who has endowed him with unparalleled song writing abilities. Dr Tumi is fast becoming a sought after songwriter for contemporary gospel. He has written songs for a number of gospel artists in South Africa.

Dr Tumi, who is also a medical doctor, wants his word based prophetic songs to change lives by ministering healing, inspiration, hope, new meaning, revival and experience of God on another dimension. So anointed are Dr Tumi’s song that he is often inundated with testimonies from those whose lives are touched and impacted by the richness of the substance found in his songs. Like many artist, Dr Tumi, who is a producer, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist, kicked off his music career in Sunday school decades ago. Church environment gave him a platform to work his skills as a pianist and singer.

In 2003 he was involved at the Coca-Cola Popstars and made it to the Top 20 after competing with close to 16 000 participants. Although he didn’t feature on the overall winner’s group, he was called back for extra training as he was one of the most outstanding talents at Popstars. This afforded him an opportunity to receive training and coaching from music greats such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbuli, Thembi Seete and Blondie Makhene. Since then his star has risen.

In 2008, Dr Tumi, along with Intense, sang at TD Jakes’ MegaFest held at the Nasrec Expo Centre. His musical endeavours saw him share the stage with the likes of Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Joyous Celebration, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Benjamin Dube, Vuyo Mokoena, Jabu Hlongwane and other members of the Joyous Celebration.

DrTumi has been featured on Gospel Time, Gospel Gold, Good Morning Africa on Africa Magic, SABC2’s Weekend Live, Impact Radio, Radio Pulpit and other media platforms.
